Six months old. I have a baby who is six months old. Where did the last half-year go? I remember when she was a newborn, looking at six-month size clothing and thinking, "She'll never fit in that." While I'm feeling a little sad that she's getting so big, I'm also really enjoying this age. I love that she now recognizes me completely, and the reaction she gives me when I get home from work. I LOVE her laugh. I love giving her news foods to try and watching her facial expressions. I love how vocal she is--a never-ending stream of squeals, laughs, screams, singing and babbling. I love watching her motor skills develop. But mostly I love how much she loves me too. We went to the doctor today for her six-month check-up. She is now:
-26 inches long (55 %tile)
-14 lbs 5 oz (15 %tile)
-16.75 in (50 %tile) (head circumference)
I'm having a bit of a dilemna. My back is not getting any better. In fact, it is getting worse as Lucy gets bigger. By 5:00 in the evening I can hardly lift her. I haven't been able to lift her in her carseat for weeks. The problem is, my doctor can't give me any anti-inflammatory medicine while I'm still nursing. Also, I haven't lost as much baby weight (especially in my very large chest) as I'd hoped at this point, and I think it's contributing to my back pain. I'm thinking of weaning Lucy over the next month. Should I feel guilty about this? She was exclusively breast-fed for the first 5 1/2 months of her life. Also, how many of you lost your baby weight AFTER you stopped nursing?

No guilt - being able to lift and play with your baby is important, too! Especially now that she's eating lots of foods, nursing becomes less important. Just buy really high quality formula, and at 1 she can start whole milk. I absolutely lost more weight when I was done nursing, but you have no worries, you look great!! Talk to you soon! Mary
We had to start supplementing with formula when Dax was just a few days old, and he's been exclusively on formula since he was about 2 months old, and he turned out fine! Why feel guilty? You can't live with back pain. Also, I lost my weight just fine without nursing. In fact, it'll probably help you feel better enough to exercise. Just my thoughts ...
She is SO cute! I'm pretty sure Phineas will be her weight in two weeks (when he's 6 weeks old!). I think you should take care of yourself, Laura. This back pain has got to be so bothersome! Especially since you can hardly lift your baby. Just feel good about whatever you choose to do. You're the mom. You know best.
i'm sorry about the back, that bites! WHat a bummer getting those shots I would be terrified of nurses after that.
Hey do NOT feel guilty! There is nothing wrong with formula feeding. When I switched Kaysia over...just a tip if Lucy doesn't like the switch...start with mostly breastmilk in a bottle and some formula and then slowly even it out and then do more formula...etc. until the bottle is all formula. They don't like to just go cold turkey usually. Also I lost a ton more weight once I stopped breast feeding Kaysia and I feel like I am having a harder time losing it while I am nursing Ryder. Some people lose it while others after. I am sorry your back is still so bad. It makes taking care of a baby really tough I am sure. Especially as they get bigger. Although I must say that Lucy only weighs 2 more lbs than Ryder. Sad but true. We make em fat! Good luck with everything. We still need to hang out. So call anytime. I need a break from Springville!
Laura, I love Jen's idea about mixing the breast milk with the formula until it's completely formula. What do you think? Looks like you've got lots of support from your peers . . . a real blessing to have a network like this. Love ya, Mom
Hey Laura! Sorry about your back. You are such a good mom and you need to do what's best for both of you and if that means formula, there should be no guilt whatsoever!
