My parents just drove away with our dog, Calvin, to have him put to sleep. I'm sitting here crying so hard I can barely breathe, and thinking, "Laura, you've known this was coming for years, it's what's best." Even though I know it's best for Calvin, I still can't believe how awful I feel. We got Calvin the Christmas I turned 10. I still remember how we ran around screaming and yelling for joy when we found out we were getting a puppy. He has been such a happy part of my life ever since. Anyone who knows our family realizes how much a part of it he is. He's our "little brother". There are lots of things that I will miss about Calvin. Here are a few:
-The jingling of his tags when he walks.
-Calvin used to come on all of our hikes with us. He would run back and forth, from the front of the line to the back to make sure everyone was okay.
-He was a very intuitive little dog. He could sense when someone was sad, and he would cuddle next to them to make them feel better.
-His little tricks--sit, down, roll over, shake hands, etc.
-Calvin was so playful in his younger days. We used to get him all riled up and play tug-of-war with him and his chew toys.
-We used to all start howling and Calvin would join in. Too funny.
I look around and see evidence of him everywhere. His pillow in the living room, his 'paw' towel, his doggy door, his food bowls. For those of you who have never loved a pet, you probably think I'm crazy right now. For those of you who have....you understand how deeply you come to love your pet, and how hard it is to say good bye. I guess he's probably gone by now. Love you buddy.

I'm so sorry. I can totally empathize. It's so hard to lose a pet that is truly part of your family.
.. I can't believe this. Calvin is a part of so many of my memories at your house. I am sorry Lar.. my heart hurts for you.
:(
What was wrong with him?
Rest in peace, Calvin. Even Lucy loved him!
wait...what? Calvin is too young at heart and full of life. That dog was awesome, everytime the doorbell rang, he'd bark and get so excited and everyone would say with a loud annoyed voice, "Calvin!" Like honestly. No but Laura, I'm sad for you, that dog was a huge part of your family. I'm sorry to hear the news. He really was all those things that you mentioned.
Ohhh Laura...I am so sorry! I totally remember when you guys got Calvin, and yes it was SO exciting. I loved Calvin, he really was the best dog ever!
K that breaks my heart too... So sorry. Dogs are the greatest.
That is so hard. My parents put our dog down when I was at BYU ad didn't tell me until after the fact. I seriously cried for a couple days. It is so hard when they are a family member.
So So Sorry Laura, we have found the best therapy to losing a dog is getting a new one, it won't replace Calvin, it will just help take away the pain a little!
I'm so sorry, Laura. I'll be thinking about you guys and hope you're doing okay.
We are so sad for you, Erin called and told us. We love calvin!
What a sweet post. I haven't ever been much of a pet person, but Calvin was my only exception. He really was more like a person than a dog. I loved it when he would sit beside me and let me play with his soft ears. And I loved the way he always went straight for Grandma Hale at family dinners and waited for her to feed him steak. I am sad for you all.
Oh Laura! I'm in shock. Not Calvin! I remember when you got him- he was such a cute little puff ball. I remember in 6th grade when we used to play like we had cell phones and call Calvin. He is such a part of the Hale family. I am so so sorry. Rest in peace Calvin-you will be missed!
